RAINWATER HARVESTING: A SMART INVESTMENT FOR A THIRSTY FUTURE

For years, residents of Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State have struggled with crippling water scarcity, impacting their daily lives and livelihoods. The situation has been particularly challenging for communities like Asa I, where families have been forced to trek long distances in search of water, a task often leaving children late for school and households with insufficient supplies. However, a significant change has been brought about by the Benue ACReSAL Project, which has provided rainwater harvesting structures to vulnerable communities in the area.

Mrs. Iganya Inalegwu, a resident of Asa I and mother of six, is one of the beneficiaries who is experiencing a remarkable transformation in her life. Before the intervention, Mrs. Inalegwu and her family relied on shallow hand-dug wells and limited rainwater collection during the rainy season, which quickly ran out. Now, with a 4000-liter rainwater harvesting structure installed at her home, she can store a significant amount of water during the rainy season. The impact has been profound.

“We can now store enough water to last longer,” Mrs. Inalegwu explained. “After the rainwater was finished, I buy water from Otobi Water Board and resell to other members of the community which gives me some income to support my family.” Furthermore, inspired by her newfound stability, she has diversified her income by selling other household essentials like garri, sugar, and groundnuts.

The ACReSAL Project’s intervention has led to several positive changes in Mrs. Inalegwu’s household and community:

  • Increased water consumption: The availability of stored rainwater has allowed the family to consume more water, improving hygiene and overall well-being.
  • Multiple streams of income: Selling water and other goods has provided Mrs. Inalegwu with financial independence and the ability to better support her family.
  • Reduced burden of water collection: Family members, especially children, no longer have to walk long distances in search of water, freeing up their time for education and other activities.
  • Improved school attendance: With the burden of water collection lifted, children are now able to attend school on time and focus on their studies.

The success story of Mrs. Inalegwu highlights the positive impact of the Benue ACReSAL Project in addressing water scarcity and empowering communities in Otukpo LGA. The rainwater harvesting structures are not only providing access to clean water but also creating opportunities for economic growth and improved quality of life for residents.
