The Benue State Rehabilitation Board in Apir is experiencing remarkable transformation, thanks to the intervention of the Benue Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project. Previously struggling with inadequate resources and infrastructure, the Board, which provides vital training and rehabilitation services to individuals with physical, psycho-social disabilities, and those recovering from substance abuse and mental health issues, is now thriving.

Before the ACReSAL intervention, the Rehabilitation Board faced daunting challenges, including limited access to potable water, persistent food shortages, and poor lighting conditions within the premises. According to Mr. Mbakindev Alexander, the Executive Secretary of the institution, these challenges hindered the Board’s ability to effectively care for and train its 60 trainees.

Following a visit from Benue State’s Executive Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, and a subsequent assessment of the Board’s urgent needs, the ACReSAL Project stepped in to provide crucial support. This included the installation of two solar-powered boreholes to provide a potable water supply for both the boys’ and girls’ hostels and the host community.
Additionally, 50 solar-powered streetlights were installed, significantly improving visibility and safety throughout the school grounds at night. Beyond infrastructure improvements, the ACReSAL Project also provided vital livelihood support, donating rice and garri to address the critical issue of food insecurity. Mr. Mbakindev stated that this support enabled the institution to adequately feed its trainees throughout the entire second term of the 2024/2025 academic year, from January to April.
The impact of the ACReSAL Project has been profound.
The institution has seen a dramatic increase in enrollment, jumping from 60 to 396 trainees. The improved conditions have also attracted a greater number of staff, bolstering the Board’s capacity to serve its growing population.
Key Outcomes of ACReSAL Intervention:
Significant Increase in Enrolment: From 60 to 396 trainees.
Well-Lit Premises: Ensuring safety and security at night.
Increased Interest: More potential trainees are applying to join the programme.
Reliable Water Supply: Eliminating water scarcity for daily needs.
Sufficient Food Supply: Guaranteeing nutritional support for trainees.
Expanded Workforce: Increasing the Board’s ability to provide comprehensive care.
The success story of the Benue State Rehabilitation Board serves as a testament to the positive impact of targeted interventions and the importance of supporting vulnerable populations. The ACReSAL Project’s commitment to improving the lives of those in need is transforming the landscape of rehabilitation services in Benue State.
