In a remarkable demonstration of innovation, service, and community impact, Oluwafemi Joshua Opeyemi, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Member deployed to Benue ACReSAL, has exemplified the true meaning of transformative youth empowerment in the digital age.

A First-Class graduate of Computer Science (B.Tech) from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Oluwafemi has not only embraced the mission of the NYSC but elevated it through meaningful technology-based intervention.

As part of his Community Development Service (CDS) project, Opeyemi successfully trained students in embedded systems, laying a strong foundation in robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the very frontier of modern technology.
The training was not merely theoretical; students applied knowledge gained to build a functional Smart Irrigation System, marrying innovation with sustainable environmental solutions. This initiative directly aligns with the goals of the Benue ACReSAL Project, where climate-smart solutions and capacity strengthening for future change-makers remain top priorities.

In addition to the technical training, Oluwafemi also made a transformative impact on the school’s digital infrastructure. At Government College, Makurdi, he revitalized the ICT laboratory, increasing its number of functional computers from 2 to 53. Through strategic repairs, replacement of essential components such as processors, hard drives, and mice, as well as comprehensive software maintenance and installations of licensed applications, he has expanded student access to digital learning and improved ICT literacy in the school. He further provided detailed documentation and study materials to ensure knowledge continuity for future learners.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Ms. Gokum Stella Beaulah, Assistant Director, Community Development Service Branch of the NYSC Benue Secretariat, who represented the State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Garba Veronica, commended the Corps Member for his exceptional contribution. She emphasized that the project captured the true essence of the NYSC programme which was creating lasting impact through innovation and service in areas of deployment.
The Principal of Government College Makurdi, Mr. Apee Joseph, expressed deep appreciation for the intervention, noting that the initiative will significantly boost students’ learning experiences and open their minds to global technological possibilities.

On behalf of the State Project Coordinator of Benue ACReSAL, the Communication Officer, Mr. Ephraim Hemben, lauded Opeyemi as an exemplary Corps Member, describing him as a diligent and brilliant addition to the ACReSAL team. He highlighted Oluwafemi’s dedication, willingness to support staff, and consistent demonstration of the values embedded in the ACReSAL project—innovation, excellence, and sustainable impact.

Oluwafemi’s milestone stands as a testament to what young Nigerians can achieve when given the right support, mentorship, and opportunity. His legacy at Government College Makurdi will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of innovators and environmental stewards.
As Benue ACReSAL continues to strengthen community resilience and promote climate-smart growth, stories like this reaffirm the value of partnership, youth empowerment, and the transformative power of knowledge.
